Dignity & Menstrual Health Project
Background & Summary
The Moja Community Foundation Menstrual Dignity Project provides eco-friendly, reusable menstrual hygiene solutions for girls and women in Uganda. Menstrual health remains a critical barrier to girls’ education in rural Uganda, where insufficient access to hygiene products leads to school absenteeism and health risks.
Building on this mission, the proposed project aims to train women and girls in Asuret, Soroti District in the production of reusable sanitary pads, while simultaneously distributing complete reusable menstrual kits to vulnerable beneficiaries. As a rural community in the Teso region of Eastern Uganda, Asuret faces particular challenges: high poverty, limited access to affordable hygiene products, and inadequate menstrual health education.
The initiative aims to reduce school absenteeism, promote menstrual dignity, and improve menstrual health management, while equipping women and girls with practical skills for income generation and sustainable community development.
Moja Community Foundation is committed to promoting menstrual health and dignity for girls and women, particularly in underserved rural communities. Through its Menstrual Dignity Project, the Foundation works with female Village Health Teams (VHTs) who are already trained in low-budget reusable pad making.
Building on this experience, the Foundation’s work in the Teso region has revealed a significant and urgent need for sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions. Although awareness-raising and training are effective, the lack of permanent access to affordable menstrual products remains a major obstacle for girls.
